Ford Taurus SHO Exhaust System FAQs
What size exhaust tip for a Taurus SHO?
A car's exhaust tip size is determined by measuring from the clamp to the end of the tip. The stock Taurus SHO exhaust tip is three inches. However, the aftermarket exhaust market offers many other sizes, including 4-inch, 5-inch and even 7-inch tips. Be sure to choose a tip with an inlet diameter that will fit your exhaust pipe diameter. The MRT Street Performance Axle-Back for the 2010+ Taurus SHO has 4-inch tips that come with a standard polished stainless steel or optional black matte finish.
Will a new exhaust tip change the sound?
While the exhaust tip size has little impact on the volume, it can affect the overall sound. A larger Taurus SHO exhaust tip produces a stronger, fuller sound while a smaller tip makes the sound raspier. Making the tip wider or narrower can also change the exhaust note. There will need to be a significant difference between the factory tip and aftermarket tip length, or the tip diameter and the tailpipe diameter, for it to have an audible effect.
What Taurus has a dual exhaust?
In the Taurus line-up, only the Ford Taurus SHO has a true dual exhaust system. All other models have a cat-back dual exhaust. This means the dual pipes only go from the cat-back to the rear exits, whereas true dual exhaust pipes go from the manifold to the rear exit.
Is it easy to install a Ford Taurus exhaust?
Installing an aftermarket axle-back exhaust on a Taurus SHO is a reasonable and straightforward process. To start, use a Sawzall (i.e. reciprocating saw) or another cutting tool to detach the old mufflers from the exhaust system. Next, remove the hangers from the rubber isolator and set the old mufflers aside. Place the exhaust clamps on both the driver and passenger outlet sections of exhaust tubing. Install the new MRT axle-back assembly and snug the clamps down. Once you've confirmed the exhaust tip orientation and location and made any adjustments, tighten and torque the clamps.
